Pregnancy & Postpartum
Pain during pregnancy is common but not normal. Let’s say that louder for the people in back! Pelvic floor physical therapy is ideal for helping pregnant and postpartum people with a variety of conditions because we are experts of the musculoskeletal system!
Common conditions:
Pubic Symphysis Dysfunction (PSD)
Sacroiliac Joint (SIJ) dysfunction
Low back or hip pain
Round Ligament Pain
Pregnancy or Postpartum Painful Sexual Activity
Diastasis Rectus Abdominis (DRA)
Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP): an organ drops out of its normal position due to weakened supporting muscles and tissues, often causing a feeling of pressure or lack of support in the pelvic floor
Bowel or Bladder Dysfunction
Hemorrhoids
Anal Fissures: a small crack or tear in the lining of the anus causing pain and/or bleeding with bowel movements
Perineal or Cesarean Scar: sensitivity, limited mobility
Difficulty returning to running or exercise
Treatments vary depending on your individual symptoms and goals but often include birth prep education, postpartum care education, posture and body mechanics education, manual therapy, self-management strategies, breathing strategies, strength/endurance exercises, and education.
